I think perhaps I enjoyed it because I had the expectation that it was going to be the usual RTD finale fare - I tend to expect a major bit of fanfic tosh for a finale now such that I'm watching it spotting all the obscure references and ignoring the plot holes. Certainly if someone like Moffat or Paul Cornell produced an episode like that I'd be bitterly disappointed, but then I tend to think I set higher expectations if I see their names on the credits.

Certainly one of the things I am most looking forward to when Moffat takes the helm is to see what he makes of the big episodes like these, as RTD has always kept them very much for himself.

As to an episode producing massively different reactions, you only need to look back to last week where much of fandom was gushing over it being one of the best episodes so far, and I really didn't think that much of it.

One man's enjoyment is another man's misery.

Words can't express how bad this episode was. I expected it to be bad - RTD has a certain track record here - but this episode was even more "dire" than I could have predicted. It was like someone had taken the worst sort of juvenile fanfic tosh written by an eleven year old and said "let's make that the episode".

I'm surprised the episode wasn't called "Aero" it was so full of plot holes. I'd go through them all, but I'd end up with a comment far longer than your whole blog entry!

One example: last week the Doctor was going to die. This week that's changed: he can't die he regenerates. Why don't the writers of the two different episodes talk to each other to get some consistency of what "death" means? Oh wait. It was the same writer on both episodes. Russel T Davies in all his usual "deus ex machina" magnificance again.

The emporer's got no clothes and his name is Russel T Davies.
